Shrek: The Musical

January/February 2023

During my time at Wylie, I had already created set designs for this musical. The primary difference for this design was that the Allen PAC stage is wider and the proscenium is twice the height. Placing an eight to ten foot tall castle on a stage with a 30-foot proscenium would not be advisable. Therefore, Farquaad’s castle walls were designed to be twelve feet tall. Other scenery designs also required modifications. Additionally, I aimed to utilize the PAC’s 46 counterweighted lines and the deeper stage. This allowed me to incorporate more scenic elements that could be flown in and out. Below are photographs of our classes and crew working on the show, as well as some production pictures at the end.

Charlotte’s Web

October 2022

For this production, a large barn-shaped silhouette was constructed with dimensions of 20 feet tall and 16 feet wide. The silhouette included a platform, five feet tall, positioned behind it to allow other characters to hide and enable Charlotte to climb into the web at a height visible to everyone.

The barn and platform were located behind the mid-stage black so that when Wilbur (the pig) was sold to another farmer, the barn would appear by raising the mid-stage, and the fencing would be reconfigured to accommodate the new setting.

The third scene was at the county fair, where we again employed the mid-stage black and used another wooden frame with wire and rope for Charlotte’s web. We also used a portion of the platform that would sit behind the coral made by the adaptable fencing we had used in the earlier scenes.
