Scenic Painting Techniques—Technical Theatre I Students

Students get a demonstration of several different scenic painting techniques and also have a chance to try their hands at doing them. Most students are hesitant to paint, thinking that it will not turn out well, but once they see that if they just trust the process, they will often be pleasantly surprised.

Their project assignment is to create the iconic masks of comedy and tragedy on a two foot square piece of muslin flat. They also must utilize at least three different techniques that are on the menu as an option for their chosen cartooned sketch before beginning to paint.

Finally they get to evaluate everyone’s work. Even the advanced tech students join in on the fun by determining the top five best painting projects.
